Transjakarta Boosts Safety and Comfort for Female Passengers

PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) is reinforcing its commitment to providing a safe, warm, and inclusive public transit experience.

To provide peace of mind for all female commuters

In a strategic partnership with the Jakarta Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control Agency (PPAPP), the transit operator is rolling out enhanced protections and comfort specifically tailored for female passengers. This collaboration aims to guarantee that every aspect of the Transjakarta network serves as a secure environment for women and children.

Transjakarta President Director, Welfizon Yuza has reaffirmed that hospitality toward women and children is a top priority for Jakarta’s transit network.

To ensure passenger comfort, Transjakarta has implemented women-only zones in every vehicle and deployed specialized pink-liveried buses to handle the city’s high-traffic corridors.

“We want to provide peace of mind for all female commuters. Beyond the bus cabin, we highlighted a broader corporate mission: fostering gender equality in the workplace as part of the agency’s long-term sustainability goals," he expressed, Friday (1/9).

He also outlined a roadmap to significantly increase the number of women behind the wheel. While female bus operators currently make up a mere 2% to 3% of the workforce, Transjakarta is aiming for a major shift, targeting a 20% to 30% representation within the next three years.

“We want to shatter the stigma and prove that women are more than capable of holding pivotal roles in the transportation industry,” he explained.

Transjakarta has introduced "Lentera," a pioneering volunteer task force aimed at preventing sexual harassment on buses and at stations.

The program is expected to grow into a community-driven movement, shifting the responsibility of safety from just the authorities to a more participatory, public-led oversight system.

Through these progressive measures, Transjakarta aims to do more than just transport passengers; it is fostering a transit culture centered on safety and human dignity.

"Our commitment extends beyond trip security. We are also prioritizing the well-being of our staff and commuters by establishing a new daycare facility at our Cawang headquarter," he explained.

Transjakarta’s Director of Finance and HR, Mayangsari Dian Irwantari stated that the current daycare facility is a pilot project that will eventually be expanded to key transit stations.

“We want to support both our working mothers and our commuters by providing high-quality, comfortable childcare for children ages two to six,” she stated.

Citing the city's female-heavy transit demographics, Jakarta PPAPP Agency Head, Dwi Oktavia is applauding Transjakarta's evolution while calling for the reinforcement of existing safety infrastructure. She highlighted the 69 SAPA posts as a critical foundation that must be further strengthened through staff development.

"This collaboration is a clear example of government accountability in action. Regularly training our transit staff to intervene in cases of violence ensures that our public transit remains a secure and reliable environment for everyone," she stated.
